I think I have a virus on my computer that’s not allowing me internet access?

I never had any problems with my computer before, it less then a year old. I have a hp window vista. I tryed installing yahoo messenger and I think I got a virus from that. Now I can not get on the internet. I tried calling my internet provider and discovered that is not the problem, it’s something to do with my computer. I can not use the internet so any anti virus using the internet I can’t do. Is thee anything else I can try before I go and spend a lot of money? Any suggestions would help. Please let me know step by step, I am not a computer wiz, Thanks

Help!!!401k lost $1400 overnight?

Any finance wizes out there? I’m in panic mode. My 401k was just starting to come back a bit from this summer’s pitiful economy when yesterday’s miserable day at the stocks just took another huge bite out of my dwindling retirement. What do I do? I’m ready to cut and run and cash it out. At least then I would at least have the pleasure of spending my hard earned money rather than watch in horror as it evaporates. My golden years are turning into my “dirt” years before my eyes.
Yes, I have money because I worked my tail off for it. No trustfunds, inheritances, or windfalls here. Just elbow grease and varicose veins.

If Illegal immigrant’s value to economy is $1.8 TRILLION, wouldn’t it hurt our economy if they’re all deported?

I’m not a math wiz, but wouldn’t getting rid of all illegals tomorrow hurt our economy if their value is $1.8TRILLION? Where would we get the money to make up for it?

If the 8.1 million undocumented immigrants who cut lawns, bus tables and perform other jobs disappeared overnight, the nation’s economy would lose nearly $1.8 trillion in annual spending.

Texas, the second-hardest-hit state after California, would lose 1.2 million undocumented workers and $220.7 billion in expenditures.

These are just some of the findings from a study done by the Perryman Group, a Waco-based economic analysis firm, whose work was commissioned by Americans for Immigration Reform, a group spearheaded by the Greater Houston Partnership.

The story also pointed out that the Perryman Group, an economic research firm in Waco, estimates that the annual contribution to U.S. gross domestic product by illegal immigrants is $652 billion. The group also cites that the costs of education, health care and incarceration in six states, including Texas, is at least $27 billion.

A question about the author of the Harry Potter series?

Not long ago, Ms. Rowlings announced in front of a huge audience (largely made up of college kids, or so I was given to understand) that she had written the Dumbledore character as a gay man.
I must confess, this confused and upset me. I went back and re-read all the books, and watched every movie that’s been out so far (for probably the seventh or eighth time), and I see not a single HINT that the old wiz was gay…for that matter, I don’t see anything there that would suggest ANY sexual involvement.
Was Ms. Rowlings “playing to her audience”, d’ya think, or did I miss something??
Since she has announced the “pre-quel”, I’m sure she’ll be expounding on this revelation…but I have to wonder…is she being intellectually honest, here, or is she simply creating yet more controversy in order to sell even more books?
Seriously, she is already one of the most famous writers of her time, and incredibly wealthy…so WHY?????

Let me clarify…in a “pre-quel”, she can easily go back into Dumbledore’s life and create a sexual entanglement for him with a character we already know, or even bring a “previously unknown” character in to fill the void in Dumbledore’s hidden love life.

Yeah, she’s already got all the money she can ever spend, but since when was that enough for anyone??
Incredible wealth only seems to generate a driving desire for more, MORE…MORE!!!!!!

I don’t think it upset me because of any prejudice I may have. I think it upset me because I had alot of respect for the lady as a writer, and the notion that she might be playing to the crowd to create controversy disappointed me.
The more since she’s announced that she’s working on a pre-quel.
As some others said, these are supposed to be children’s books.
You know, I really never thought of Dumbledore as being a threat to anyone, gay or straight.
Even after Rowling let him out of the closet, it still didn’t occur to me that, as a gay man, he wouldn’t be an appropriate mentor for young boys.
Even after some joker said something about pedophilia when I asked this in the R&S section, it STILL didn’t dawn on me!

So, seeing him as gay would not have affected my view of him as a mentor…well, at least, not till some of you made that suggestion, anyhow.

I was simply asking whether or not Rowling actually could have seen the wiz as a gay man, but no hint of this crept into any of her stories (and, I suppose this is possible, even if unlikely), or if she were “riding the wave” by telling her audience something they really wanted to hear.
I have to admit, the notion that she may have compromised her intellectual honesty does disappoint me.
